Mobile Education Store’s entire suite of speech therapy apps were recently named as top teaching apps by TeachHub.com. This is quite an honor. They liked all of our apps so much that they included them all into one entry. All the other entries were single apps. Even better was how the list was compiled.
The author of this post had few a few criteria for determining which apps to include:
•Does the app support classroom discussion?
•Is the app intuitive to the age it’s intended to serve?
•Are there minimal/no ads?
Once she was satisfied with the answers to these three questions, she tested it on students. If they came back to use it a second and third time, if they told their friends about it, if they asked their parents to download it at home, then it made the list.
Short, Simple and Sweet. And it contains the only real test – Do kids like playing the app? We as adults can think we have created the greatest app ever that solves every problem. But the fact is that if kids don’t like playing, THEY WON’T. It’s this simple truth that led me to start creating apps in the first place. My wife and I had spent thousands of dollars buying what was sold as the top speech therapy software on the market. It had all the bells and whistles. It had reports of every kind. It was created by professionals with a lot of initials behind their name.
And guess what, Caitlyn didn’t like playing. I couldn’t blame her either, the games were not engaging in the slightest. It was quite obvious that the software was written for adults, and not for the students who would be using it. My mantra from the beginning was that the apps had to be fun to play first. Only when the student’s are engaged in an app will they be open to learning what the app is trying to teach them.
We are grateful that our apps are so well thought of and such a hit with the kids!!
