Hey, it’s a two for one!! This post contains reviews of two of our award winning speech therapy apps, ConversationBuilder and LanguageBuilder. The review was written by Liz Gretz. Liz is a school based SLP in Chicago and she writes the award winning “Speech Lady Liz” blog. Her blog was named one of the best of 2012. She does a great job with her posts and only reviews products she is personally using. It is always rewarding to hear when someone is getting positive benefit from something I created!
ConversationBuilder is a virtual conversation simulator for kids. It is designed to help kids practice how to have conversations with their peer by letting them record their half of the conversation and then listen to the other half. We interweave the student’s name and interests to personalize the conversations. Once the conversation is finished, we interlace the student recordings with the pre-recorded peer responses to form a complete conversation. The students then can hear themselves have a conversation with a peer as it is supposed to sound. Not only is this incredibly motivating for the students, but it teaches them the basics of pragmatic language in a way that they can rapidly understand.
LanguageBuilder is designed to help kids learn how to many inference and build a narrative. Students are presented a photograph, and then asked to record a sentence about that photograph. There are 250 photographs broken down among 10 themes. The student selects one of themes to play. LanguageBuilder has three levels of hints to help students come up with ideas for their sentences. Hint level 1 gives the student an almost complete sentence with just a few words missing. Hint level 2 gives the student only a few words at the beginning of a possible sentence. Hint level 3 gives them an audio hint instead of a text hint. The photographs are high quality and age appropriate, and the record/playback feature is a big hit with kids. LanguageBuilder is a great stepping stone for our more advanced apps, StoryBuilder and ConversationBuilder.
Both ConversationBuilder and StoryBuilder are part of Mobile Education Store’s award winning “Builder Series” of educational apps. Both apps have won multiple awards. Mobile Education Store has won over 25 awards including educational developer of the year for both 2011 and 2012.
