Review of Crack the Books Reading Comprehension Digital Science Books

It’s always nice to hear others agree that you have created something so groundbreaking that it will literally change the face of education.  We always felt during the development of Crack the Books that we are onto something special, but you never quite know until it gets out there.

Mobile Education Store has recently launched a series of digital science books meant to help elementary aged students with reading comprehension, and the reviews are starting to come in.

This first review was done by AppyMall, one of the leading websites for information on apps for education.  They really understand what I was trying to accomplish with the app – making curriculum science concepts available to ALL students, regardless of their academic level.  And this isn’t just about the adjustable reading levels.  Part of the equation is making kids want to read.  If we can inspire a student’s curiosity about the world, if we can foster a love of reading and learning – then the rest of it will take care of itself over time.

The next two reviews of Pines to Vines – The Forest Biome and Blades – The Grassland Biome were written by Teachers with Apps.  THE goto site for educators to find out about apps, Teachers With Apps goes into a lot of detail about the apps. They too recognize the how revolutionary these books are, and how they can help all kids, from those with special needs to those who are academically gifted.

Pines to Vines is a state of the art, upper elementary science book based on the forest biome.  Developed in collaboration with Oregon State University’s Department of Forestry and a team of educators, Pines to Vines is a standards based, core curriculum aligned digital science book that covers a variety of topics, including forest layers, range and climate of forest biomes, plant and animal wildlife, adaptations, forest benefits, and forest threats.

Blades is a state of the art, upper elementary science book based on the grassland biome.  Developed in collaboration with Doane College’s Department of Biology and a team of educators, Blades is a standards based, core curriculum aligned digital science book that covers a variety of topics,  including the structure of grass, plant and animal wildlife, adaptations, benefits of grasslands, and grassland threats.  Students will learn about all major grassland ecosystems including tropical savannas, steppes, prairies, pampas, and velds.

Pines to Vines is part of our Crack the Books™ series of digital books.  These revolutionary books are the first that can be adjusted for reading level without sacrificing curriculum content. Students can experience all the content presented to their classmates, while reading at a level that is appropriate to their ability.  Targeting 3rd – 6th grade science and social studies concepts, our iBooks allow for reading level adjustment from 1st to 8th grade within the same book, making it possible for all students in a classroom to access the same curriculum content regardless of their reading ability.

Pines to Vines is part of Mobile Education Store’s award winning suite of educational apps.  MES has won over 50 app awards and has been named educational developer of the year in both 2011 and 2012.

Hello,
I am interested in your programs and want to recommend them in my blog but I have one concern. The latest recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests limiting total screen time for children to two hours a day. Does this include programs like yours? Have you had any input from professionals on this issue? I want to recommend your information but I need to have this addressed. Please let me know.
Thank you,
Kathy Gruhn
